Left-handed Phenomena
Though they only represent 10% of society, those with Left Handed dominance have disproportionately excelled in many different fields, pioneered new constructs for society, revolutionized existing paradigms of function, and have become innovative leaders in roles that span a wide range of vocations. Neuroscience has shown that ‘Lefties’ have neural networks more developed in the Right Hemisphere of the brain, and while having to adapt to a dominantly right-handed mechanistic society, they appear to have a more symmetrically shaped brain than those of the vast right-hand dominant population. Further studies show that ‘Lefties’ tend to have a greater capacity for ‘Divergent Thinking’, which allows them to look at scenarios from multiple perspectives and at a more complex resolution.

(I’m not making any moral judgements to their behaviors, and I am not Left-Hand dominant.) However, my theory posits that Ambidextrous development through the piano (similar to Lefties adapting to Right-handed society) allows access to latent or underdeveloped Neural Networks in the right hemisphere, and strengthens the communication signaling and speed between both hemispheres of the brain by increasing the myelination of the axons in the Corpus Callosum. This increased communication efficiency between both hemispheres through ambidextrous development, along with the stimulation of multiple cognitive areas with music performance and creation, perhaps allows for greater divergent thinking, spontaneous creativity, ‘out of the box’ analysis, and more complex reasoning.

Again, not making any moral judgements of these ‘Lefties’ that have risen to the top of their fields, navigated society to become the most powerful figure in the world, invented or conditioned business practices to become the richest people in the world, produced 3 of the 4 highest grossing films ever, become ultra-famous and influential in our entertainment industry, become the first self-made female black billionaire, win two noble prizes in two different fields of science as a female, become the youngest self-made billionaire, brought us one of the greatest human evolutionary trajectory change (computers and software for the sharing of all human knowledge), profoundly shaped our cognitive and emotional states through music presentation, etc. Yes, some of the ‘Righties’ have done extraordinary feats, but the disproportionate projections of high achievement by ‘Lefties’ should give some of us a reason to ‘Tickle The Ivories’…or at least I hope.

The Extraordinary Left-Handers
Aristotle – One of the most influential philosophers and pioneering contributors to science. (Wikipedia): Aristotle was an Ancient Greek philosopher and polymath. His writings cover a broad range of subjects spanning the natural sciences, philosophy, linguistics, economics, politics, psychology, and the arts.

Leonardo da Vinci – Da Vinci is considered by many as one of the greatest Artist and Engineer. He is well known to have used both sides of consciousness (Wikipedia): Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who was active as a painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect.

Ludwig van Beethoven – Beethoven, along with Mozart, are considered by many as two of the Greatest Musicians in history. Both were known for prolifically composing, pioneering new musical formats, and as extraordinary improvisers.

Isaac Newton – One of the most influential scientists that brought us the understanding of gravity, the three laws of motion, the composition of white light (optic), and developed a new branch of math known as Calculus. The Scientific Understanding of the measurable world is often referred as Newtonian Physics or Mechanics. (Wikipedia): Sir Isaac Newton was an English polymath active as a mathematician, physicist, astronomer, alchemist, theologian, and author who was described in his time as a natural philosopher.[7] He was a key figure in the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment that followed.

Nikola Tesla – Brilliant inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical engineer, and futurist. (Britannica): Tesla discovered and patented the rotating magnetic field, the basis of most alternating-current machinery. He also developed the three-phase system of electric power transmission.

Marie Curie – Marie Curie is the only person to have won two Nobel Prizes in two different fields. She won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 and the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911. Although Linus Pauling also won two Nobel Prizes, one was the Nobel Peace Prize, a non-scientific award. (Wikipedia): Maria Salomea Skłodowska-Curie, known simply as Marie Curie, was a Polish and naturalised-French physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity.

Steve Jobs & Bill Gates – Although both of these tech titans didn’t invent the computer or software systems, they were able to mass-market the utility of the desktop and software applications. This fundamentally brought us one of the greatest human evolutionary trajectory change by making all human knowledge and experiences assessible to anyone with a computer and access to the internet. Bill Gates, with his divergent thinking and complex reasoning, became the richest person in the world from 1997-2007, 2009, and from 2014 to 2017. He still remains one of the richest in the world. Steve Jobs, who had a more philosophical and artistic approach to design and business, was the mastermind and energy to one of the richest companies in the world. Apple has been the World’s Most Admired Company for the last 17 years.

Oprah Winfrey – Oprah is the first black woman to become a self-made billionaire. (Wikipedia): Oprah Gail Winfrey, also known mononymously as Oprah, is an American talk show host, television producer, actress, author, and media proprietor. She is best known for her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, broadcast from Chicago, which ran in national syndication for 25 years, from 1986 to 2011.

Mark Zuckerburg – Zuckerberg developed one of the fastest growing social platforms to globally connect humanity. In doing so, he became the youngest self-made billionaire. He is currently the 4th richest person in the world.

The Presidents – To become President of the United States and the most powerful person in the world, one needs to navigate very complex social and political systems. In recent times with pervasive media coverage and an entrenched political machine, complex understanding of social systems and the ability to persuade a diverse constituency is required to move “up the ladder”. Barack Obama, who is left-hand dominant, became the first black President of the United States and overcame one of the most hardened traditions. Five of the last 9 presidents were left-hand dominant. In 1992, all three Presidential candidates were left-handed (George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton and Ross Perot).

The Directors – Directing is the most demanding role in movie making, requiring complex understanding of so many facets. James Cameron has written and directed three of the four highest-grossing films (1-Avatar, 3-Avatar: The Way of Water, 4-Titanic). Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott are highly regarded directors for their movie presentation of historical events.
