M1 – Half & Whole Steps

Whole and half steps.
Moving key to key is in Whole and Half steps. Moving to the right raises the pitch, while moving left lowers the pitch.
Let’s take a look at some whole steps.
Now let’s take a look at some half steps.

Music melodies often stay within a certain key signature, or modes, which will be discussed in later modules.
To express notes outside of this pattern, a sharp or flat is used to raise or lower the note from it’s intended key.
This is a sharp, which raises the note a half step.
And this is a flat, which lowers the note a half step.
Notice that C sharp is the same key as D flat, and D sharp is the same key as E flat, and F sharp is the same key as G flat, and G sharp is the same key as A flat, and A sharp is the same key as B flat.
